Miss Mary P. Browne graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. Following her undergraduate career, she attended Columbia University, where she received her Master’s Degree. She also pursued graduate study at Syracuse University, Virginia State College, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and North Carolina A & T State University. In 1950, Miss Browne joined the William Penn faculty as music teacher and choral director. Alumni remember her fondly as a devoted instructor who possessed the innate ability to train and cultivate young voices. Most of all, they recall the school tradition of her leading the choir in performance of Handel’s Messiah each December. This ritual began the year before Miss Browne arrived at the school, but she made it her own to the extent that the tradition now continues through annual performances of the Mary P. Browne Community Chorus.
